children: Easter Egg Dye-ing…without the eggs
We haven’t dyed eggs before because Ry is allergic to them. This year I came across ceramic eggs, but with shipping, they’d never make it in time. Then I stopped by our local craft store & found wooden eggs. Tonight we dyed them. Then we decorated them with glitter glue pens. The boys had lots of fun. I took lots of pictures.
the wooden eggs had to sit in the dye for a long time, but it did work.

Our daffodils don’t last long, but they smell like spring. I should probably throw them out.

what a great idea using wooden eggs! they will sure last a lot longer then a real one! I love Ry’s green fingertips! (I have to say, I also have daffodils that look just like yours!)
That’s eggs=actly ;) what I was thinking! These would make great keepsakes and memory joggers as the kids ( and us) get older! Wonderful idea!

The wood eggs are a great idea! Egg allergies are common among many of the kids I do projects with so this is a great alternative, even to the plastic or foam ones which we have done. I like this much better! And your photos are lovely.

we also tried it with paper mache eggs & they worked, too, I would think styrofoam would work, then you could press little jewels/trinkets/etc. into them after?

Shared this with several of my facebook friends who have egg allergies as well. My kids have the opposite problem, allergic to artifical dyes, but I am still thinking of doing this project to make nest eggs to train the new young chicken and duck hens we are raising right now, so they will lay in the nestboxes and not on the floor.

Thanks for the info. I am bookmarking to check these out for next Easter. I have some natural food dyes I bought over Christmas that I am going to try doing a all natural, home-version of the PAAS Tie-dye egg kit to see if it works. I am going to post efforts next week.

This technique would, I suspect, work quite well on wooden eggs that were painted white in advance. As for real eggs – not sure about the modge-podge – you can also make it with plain white glue and water – I would *think* if you used non-toxic glue it wouldn’t be a problem but I wouldn’t have any clue how to know for sure or not!
(Well I mean there’s *one* way to know for sure but y’know…)
We may try decoupaging next year. This year we are using a natural food coloring set we started buying for making cookies and cupcakes and other confections from a supplier of IndiaTree products we found through Amazon.com (to learn more about India Tree natural food dyes you can look up http://www.indiatree.com and will try using drops of the natural dye on different areas in a zipper top sandwich bag to make “tie-dye” Easter eggs from our chickens brown and green/blue eggs. I will post pics on my blog next week of our efforts.

When we were little my mother MADE us all use wooden eggs even though none of us were allergic to the real kind. Yesterday we were all home together for Easter for the first time in almost a decade she pulled out a Easter basket filled with our wooden eggs from throughout the years… I couldn’t explain to you how much fun it was to look back and go through all of our eggs! Youll be glad that you used wooden ones that last forever rather than the real eggs that will last about a week!

Your post brought back so many good memories! My mom used to boil colored wax paper and dip the egg shells in the water, then my brother, sister and I would paint and glue stickers on them. On Easter Sunday they would show up under our beds loaded with candied peanuts my mom would make. Thank you for reminding me of these sweet childhood moments!

What a great idea! I hate dyeing real eggs because no one in the family eats hard boiled eggs (not even in egg salad form), but The Five-Year-Old loves to do crafts, and I want to encourage that creativity. This is a fabulous alternative. Thanks! (Beautiful pictures btw.)

And if you really wanted to dye “eggs” – start saving the shells from eggs that you have used, rinse them (don’t use soap), let dry and then just dye the shells themselves. I would do this for my children when they were little because they didn’t like eggs but loved dyeing them. So now there was enough to go around and still have fun with them! I just did this with my grandchildren last night and really, it’s the FUN of putting the eggshell in the dye. They really aren’t into the finished product (the art teacher in me is talking now) –

I would never have thought that eggs would be something someone would be actually allergic to. I personally don’t like them much, but I’ve never heard of an egg allergy.
Well, anything’s possible. Good to know! And the tip on egg-dyeing sans ovum is a nifty idea- and a cool craft idea for anyone, because those eggs won’t go bad! Love it!

I love the idea of the wooden eggs! They are beautiful and can be played with too!
This year my son and I painted some rocks (many of which have a distinct egg shape), and I had planned to do an Easter rock hunt with them for him. It was far too cold and windy today so we never did it, but I plan to sometime this week.
