children: Easter Egg Dye-ing…without the eggs
We haven’t dyed eggs before because Ry is allergic to them. This year I came across ceramic eggs, but with shipping, they’d never make it in time. Then I stopped by our local craft store & found wooden eggs. Tonight we dyed them. Then we decorated them with glitter glue pens. The boys had lots of fun. I took lots of pictures.
the wooden eggs had to sit in the dye for a long time, but it did work.
some of the finished product.
we decorated some of the dyed eggs with glitter glue pens. Ry wanted to make one for his baby sister, hopefully she’s here by Easter (the pink one).
Covey playing with Papa.
Our daffodils don’t last long, but they smell like spring. I should probably throw them out.
more happy smiles, wouldn’t know he woke up from a nap just a few minutes before, very unhappy.

what a great idea using wooden eggs! they will sure last a lot longer then a real one! I love Ry’s green fingertips! (I have to say, I also have daffodils that look just like yours!)
That’s eggs=actly ;) what I was thinking! These would make great keepsakes and memory joggers as the kids ( and us) get older! Wonderful idea!
This looks like so much fun!
The wood eggs are a great idea! Egg allergies are common among many of the kids I do projects with so this is a great alternative, even to the plastic or foam ones which we have done. I like this much better! And your photos are lovely.
Great Pics :)
WHay an awesome idea and a very cute little boy too. I have a dozen real eggs I have painted myself.
Best regards,
HAHDani
Thanks for sharing this wonderful blog. Connie

What a neat idea!
That’s great that your art will last much longer than the usual Easter egg art! The wood grain adds its own designs and swirls too.
Absolutely love the picture of him waiting…..(not so patiently)…What a glorious expression on his face. Your post moved me – not sure why. Thanks for writing it.
Have a lovely Easter.

Great idea…we are vegan and I recently wrote a blog for celebrating an alternative easter…I definitely want to add this to my links! http://yogicare.wordpress.com/ I might have to try to find some wooden eggs that is just an amazing idea and great pics of course. :)
thank you, I was excited to both find the wooden eggs & have success with dyeing them! you may also want to check out my allergy blog: http://www.allergicadventures.com, a lot of my recipes end up being vegan since Ry can’t eat dairy or eggs!
Great shots! Which lens are you using?
thanks! these were all with my 85.
Happy Easter!
what a great idea!
Nice photo. Your post makes me want to add a new topic “Easter” in my Chinese learning blog!http://path2mandarinchinesecharacters.com. Thanks for the inspiration. Will reblog your post. :)
ah fabulous, it’s great getting the kids involved! The wooden eggs turned out really well. Lovely photographs too. Happy Easter!
Very cool – and inventive – creations!
God for you!
Great idea and eautiful photos!
Love your photographs! So happy to have found your blog :)
What a wonderful idea!!
great happy pictures! Happy Easter!
happy easter!

fantastic idea. Cheers!
Your son is very handsome! Sooo cute! I love the idea. It’s creative, especially if he is allergic to eggs. I am now going to want to do this with my siblings. I wonder if those styrofoam eggs would work?
we also tried it with paper mache eggs & they worked, too, I would think styrofoam would work, then you could press little jewels/trinkets/etc. into them after?
Yes! I love that idea
Fun stuff! :) Thanks for posting! :)
adorable!
What a great way for you son to still be able to take part in an Easter tradition….and the best part, you can store them away to use as decorations for next year. Sweet!!!
Enjoyed your post, great idea for substitute eggs!
Awesome idea!!!!
Shared this with several of my facebook friends who have egg allergies as well. My kids have the opposite problem, allergic to artifical dyes, but I am still thinking of doing this project to make nest eggs to train the new young chicken and duck hens we are raising right now, so they will lay in the nestboxes and not on the floor.
thanks for sharing, here’s a link that might be helpful with some natural dye options: http://www.amamascorneroftheworld.com/2012/03/natural-easter-egg-coloring-dye.html I also have an allergy blog you may find useful: http://www.allergicadventures.com thanks! Happy Easter!
Thanks for the info. I am bookmarking to check these out for next Easter. I have some natural food dyes I bought over Christmas that I am going to try doing a all natural, home-version of the PAAS Tie-dye egg kit to see if it works. I am going to post efforts next week.
There was a freshly pressed entry a few days ago about decoupaging eggs instead of dying them: http://2busybrunettes.com/2012/03/10/eggcited-about-easter/
This technique would, I suspect, work quite well on wooden eggs that were painted white in advance. As for real eggs – not sure about the modge-podge – you can also make it with plain white glue and water – I would *think* if you used non-toxic glue it wouldn’t be a problem but I wouldn’t have any clue how to know for sure or not!
(Well I mean there’s *one* way to know for sure but y’know…)
We may try decoupaging next year. This year we are using a natural food coloring set we started buying for making cookies and cupcakes and other confections from a supplier of IndiaTree products we found through Amazon.com (to learn more about India Tree natural food dyes you can look up http://www.indiatree.com and will try using drops of the natural dye on different areas in a zipper top sandwich bag to make “tie-dye” Easter eggs from our chickens brown and green/blue eggs. I will post pics on my blog next week of our efforts.
Again, these are beautiful photos. I particularly love the way you captured the cotton-ball bunny! Great idea.
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed. :)
It certainly looks like your son had fun. I’m sure he doesn’t see a difference between coloring eggs and things that resemble eggs. Thanks for the great photos.

Dye-ing Easter eggs, but hold the eggs please!
Great idea… they would make great gifts for family and friends… a personal gift is alway the best. Your boy is so cute :)
I love this post!
When we were little my mother MADE us all use wooden eggs even though none of us were allergic to the real kind. Yesterday we were all home together for Easter for the first time in almost a decade she pulled out a Easter basket filled with our wooden eggs from throughout the years… I couldn’t explain to you how much fun it was to look back and go through all of our eggs! Youll be glad that you used wooden ones that last forever rather than the real eggs that will last about a week!
Hope you and your beautiful children have a wonderful Easter!
Kathleen
PS Make sure you write the years— thats the best part of looking back!!
very unique art and very cute child…….
Your post brought back so many good memories! My mom used to boil colored wax paper and dip the egg shells in the water, then my brother, sister and I would paint and glue stickers on them. On Easter Sunday they would show up under our beds loaded with candied peanuts my mom would make. Thank you for reminding me of these sweet childhood moments!
great! thought of making something with the easter eggs packs I´ve got. Will try some lamp with tha plastic parts we get around here. But I just loved you arts!

I had to pin this. Really great idea!
Good idea, good fun and what a little sweetheart! Well done
On the occasion of easter; for all the children to remember Easter as a special day.
It’s good to keep a tradition and culture alive in the family. It brings family together, opens a wide range of communication, participation, new ideas and happiness.
Happy Easter to All of you.
love his serious face! x
What a great idea! I hate dyeing real eggs because no one in the family eats hard boiled eggs (not even in egg salad form), but The Five-Year-Old loves to do crafts, and I want to encourage that creativity. This is a fabulous alternative. Thanks! (Beautiful pictures btw.)
looks cute!
We use to always paint eggs for Easter …and I sometimes still do today, so much fun and thanks for the lovely photos
What fun! Such a great way to involve kids with allergies in all the Easter festivities. Beautiful eggs! Congrats on the baby sister!
Moms always find a way! Great idea, great blog.

Those look great! They’d make a great centerpiece, maybe in a glass bowl with Peeps mixed in. =)
Lovely pics and beautiful children!

Adorable!
That’s a great idea! Love the picture of your little guy waiting for his egg to be done.
That’s a god idea!:)
Great Idea!!! Nice photos and a very handsome young man.
What a marvelous idea!
And if you really wanted to dye “eggs” – start saving the shells from eggs that you have used, rinse them (don’t use soap), let dry and then just dye the shells themselves. I would do this for my children when they were little because they didn’t like eggs but loved dyeing them. So now there was enough to go around and still have fun with them! I just did this with my grandchildren last night and really, it’s the FUN of putting the eggshell in the dye. They really aren’t into the finished product (the art teacher in me is talking now) –
Have fun!
Wonderful idea! You can see the pure joy on his face! :)
Love your thoughts about and beautiful photography.
That’s one cute cotton ball bunny!
This was seriously a great idea!!! And congratulations on being one of the freshly pressed blogs! I will definitely be back! We didn’t decorate eggs this year. Just didn’t get around to it.
Love your blog!
Have a great Easter!!!
I just finished dying my egg whites for deviled eggs, and my fingers look like your son’s. Great post!
Daffodils never last long, and I always keep them long after they should be thrown out. :)
how fun!!!

awesome idea! love the detail shots!
After our family’s cracked egg mishaps of years past, wooden eggs sound like a great idea. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed, and Happy Easter!
What a great idea! Glad everyone had fun…Happy Easter!
You have an adorable son, and you take great pictures of him!
I would never have thought that eggs would be something someone would be actually allergic to. I personally don’t like them much, but I’ve never heard of an egg allergy.
Well, anything’s possible. Good to know! And the tip on egg-dyeing sans ovum is a nifty idea- and a cool craft idea for anyone, because those eggs won’t go bad! Love it!
Bellissimo!!!!
Nice eggs, it’s a good idea.
so nice! i like very much “eggswithouteggs” idea :-)
Have a HaPpY EaSteR, MoM!
Your boy, the eggs – all so darling and cute.
Peace and Luvz, Uncle Tree :)
I will definitely be back! We didn’t decorate eggs this year. Just didn’t get around to it.

Yeah, it’s really a awesome idea. And how cute the boy is!!
That’s a great idea. It probably lasts long. Please check out my blog about baseball. Come and see an 11 year old’s view on all things baseball.

This is a great idea – fun for the children and enduring keepsakes as a result. I look forward to trying this with my granddaughters next year!
Beautiful work of art, appreciated.
Looks like fun to me :)
I really enjoyed the article as well as the fine photography.
brilliant idea for egg allergic children/adults :) Absolutely love it and IF and only if our local craft store has wooden eggs or anything wooden craft wise I may try this, love the photographs too, your son is gorgeous and i hope baby arrives pretty soon.
really i like Easter Egg very much. And i used to buy every day by steeling money from my dad pocket
Amazing – do you never use flash? What lens do you use? Loved all the pics…looking forward to more:)
Thank you. I prefer natural light. The only time I use flash, is if I need it at wedding ceremonies.
So cute! I love the one of him waiting for the egg to dye with his little blue fingertips. Great photography and a cool idea. Congrats on FP!
The moment is captured so well, beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
what kind of camera do you have? nice pics. Happy upcoming labor and delivery.
I absolutely LOVE this idea!!! They look so cute! (Ry and the eggs.) I am vegan, so I especially like the added bonus that there were no chickens harmed in the making of this fun Easter tradition. I will be sharing this on my facebook community called “Go Vegan”.
ps: Kudos on being freshly pressed!

Never got to the eggs this year. But a great idea for next!

I love the idea of the wooden eggs! They are beautiful and can be played with too!
This year my son and I painted some rocks (many of which have a distinct egg shape), and I had planned to do an Easter rock hunt with them for him. It was far too cold and windy today so we never did it, but I plan to sometime this week.
I love that photo of your little guy waiting while his egg is soaking.
This is such a fantastic idea! I always get annoyed with having to throw the eggs away when they look so pretty! This way you can keep them as memorabilia. Thanks for posting! :)
what a cute idea! we never eat eggs we dye so this is a great alternative!
I never would have thought of the wooden eggs. I didn’t even know they had those. I would have gone with styrofoam, but maybe next year I will have to go find these! Thanks for the idea.
good idea!
good pictures
woowww!! this brings back so many memories… im really homesick right now… great pictures.. :-D
The “…but it did work” picture is priceless!
Love it! Hey, check out my blog too! http://lesbuddies.wordpress.com/
What a great idea! Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
We’ve decided to do this for our grandson (he’s 3) every year and keep the wooden eggs as a keepsake. Thanks for the inspiration!
